New York photo update

I didn’t have enough time to update my New York photos pool until now, so here are some highlights from the rest of the trip.

New York City

Posted by Shek on October 15th, 2009

Four days in New York City doesn’t seem like quite enough to see anything more than the highlights and that’s what I’ve been doing.  This is a taste of what will make for fun and unique trips in the future.

Quick trip to Washington

Posted by Shek on October 13th, 2009

A quick weekend in Washington, DC was, as usually happens, a whirlwind of people and unexpected outings.  It was a blast!  As I write this, I’m riding to New York City on a Bolt-Bus using the on-board wifi.  I love practical applications of technology.

Glacier National Park trip

Posted by Shek on August 18th, 2009

After a 5 day backpacking trip through the back country in Glacier National Park it dawned on me that I had never before said WOW so frequently in such a short period of time.  Entering the park through Canada’s Waterton Park and then backpacking from Goat Haunt over the Stoney Indian Pass and through the Ptarmigan tunnel to Many Glacier was a spectacular way to see a precious gem in the Rocky Mountains.  If you can prepare yourself to possibly confront a grizzly bear, then this trip is worth doing.

Mississippi River paddle #2

Posted by Shek on July 27th, 2009

Paddling 70 miles in three days on the Mississippi, from St. Cloud to Minneapolis, was a sublime way to see an increasingly more urbanized river.

Mississippi Paddle #1

Posted by Shek on July 13th, 2009

The 60 mile trip down the Mississippi River from Crow Wing State Park to Sartell, MN was incredible for the experiences of paddling 20 miles/day, portaging around dams, camping on the river, and seeing a diverse amount of wildlife.

As long as it rains in the next couple weeks, the Mississippi River levels should stay high enough to paddle.  Hopefully this will be the first of three short trips on the Mississippi this summer.

Mike & Meghan are married

Posted by Shek on July 2nd, 2009

After several years, Mike and Meghan finally tied the knot!  The wedding hill in Theodore Wirth Park was a beautiful place for the outdoor ceremony and the Chalet on the golf course was perfect for the reception.  Even a passing whitetail deer stopped briefly to watch the ceremony.

The Minnehaha on Lake Minnetonka

Posted by Shek on June 2nd, 2009

As we finished our 30 mile bike ride, we loaded up the front of a pontoon boat to cross Lake Minnetonka.  The steamboat Minnehaha cornered us at the docks in Excelsior and while this delayed the return to our cars in Wayzata, it was an opportunity to see a boat that has spent an equal number of years sitting at the bottom of Lake Minnetonka as it has ferrying passengers around the lake.

Mini golf

Posted by Shek on June 2nd, 2009

While doing a 30 mile bike ride with friends, we stopped at Big Stone Mini Golf in Minnetrista.  The mini golf holes are part of and surrounded by art installations created by the owner of the mini golf course.  It was a blast and worth checking out.

Town Hall Meetings

Posted by Shek on February 28th, 2009

I helped plan 23 town hall meetings across Minnesota where average people gave their ideas for addressing the state’s budget situation to Democratic and Republican legislators.  Thanks to a youth filled with driving across the plains, I felt comfortable driving to the five meetings I staffed.
