Changes

Posted by Shek on July 14th, 2010

Three changes I’ve enjoyed this spring/early summer involve two back-to-back instances where I saw both sunset and sunrise while at work, a new(er) car, and a fantastic new lens for my camera.

Winter 2010

Posted by Shek on July 14th, 2010

For the first time in several winters Minnesotans finally had enough consistent snow and cold to enjoy winter.  Even though the legislative session was brutal, I was still able to get out and play!

Mike & Meghan are married

Posted by Shek on July 2nd, 2009

After several years, Mike and Meghan finally tied the knot!  The wedding hill in Theodore Wirth Park was a beautiful place for the outdoor ceremony and the Chalet on the golf course was perfect for the reception.  Even a passing whitetail deer stopped briefly to watch the ceremony.

Inaugural Photo Dump

Today I attended President Obama’s inaugural.  My unorganized photos are a snapshot of an incredible day.  Enjoy!

post-election blur

Posted by Shek on December 26th, 2008

As usual, life after the election has been very busy with two legislative recounts, friends in town, a groundbreaking to rebuild downstream from Minnehaha Falls, a wedding in Western MN, a professional hockey game, and new responsibilities at work.  And of course, there was Christmas and the upcoming New Year!  It’s been a blur and a lot of fun.  Happy Holidays!

My last little role in the 2008 election

Posted by Shek on November 6th, 2008

Last Friday through Tuesday, election day, I volunteered with the Democratic Party’s coordinated campaign and was sent to run a Get Out The Vote operation in Coon Rapids, a suburb of Minneapolis.  We were based out of an historic schoolhouse and I’ve never worked out of a nicer office during an election.  It was a lot of work, a rewarding experience, and helped elect some great candidates.

My last Gopher game in the Dome

Posted by Shek on October 5th, 2008

The Metrodome opened in 1982 while I was a child living in the Twin Cities.  It was here, at a Gopher Football game, where singing the University’s fight song, the Minnesota Rouser, taught me how to spell M-i-n-n-e-s-o-t-a.

The 2009 season will be the first season since 1981 where the football team will be playing in an outdoor stadium.  I rarely attend live sporting events so I presume this will be the last time I see the Gophers playing in the Dome.  I can’t wait to see a game in the warm afternoon sun!

Paddling the Mississippi: a fall outing

Posted by Shek on September 29th, 2008

The forecast was for sun and a high in the low 70s but instead, it was foggy, cloudy, and cool.  With leaves turning color and occasional mist, the river was a very different place from what we experienced in July’s heat.

Others brought their cameras, so check out both the shots taken by Aaron, Greg, and Ed and the descriptions by Aaron and Ed.

Minnehaha Falls - a trickle

Posted by Shek on September 23rd, 2008

Minnehaha Falls still seems to have some water flowing even though the dam at Lake Minnetonka was closed on August 26th. Lake Minnetonka is the headwaters for Minnehaha Creek and a dam controls the water flow out of the lake. Lacking consistent rainfall during the last couple months, lake levels began to drop and the dam was close. If you’re curious about why this would be done, please read Minnehaha Creek’s policy and procedure for operating the dam.

This is what high flow looks like:

One year one month eighteen days …

That’s how long it took to rebuild and open the new I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River after the August 1, 2007 collapse.  Each side of the bridge has a pillar demarking the start of the bridge.  Mike Davey’s car provides a point of reference for the pillar’s size and the New York Times has a nice overhead perspective of the new bridge.
